Number Two Criteria: Seating Options

Our second criteria is the table arrangement and how easy it is to get the kids (and you!) settled at the table.  We don't have a particular preference for booths vs. tables, but if you need a hair chair, some restaurants will not let you put the high chair at the end of the booth for fire code reasons.  (Perfectly acceptable reason!)

So be sure to communicate with the hostess that you need a high chair upfront.   This will assist them in determining where to seat your party.  I will say one of my biggest pet peeves, is when I have to stand awkwardly in the aisle holding the toddler, while I patiently wait for a highchair to be brought to the table and try and stay out of other patrons way and not get hurt in the process.  I would rather wait up at the front of the restaurant for the high chair to be placed at the table.

Also, if you know your child will want to sit next to you, keep this in mind as you commence to sit down.  The longer it takes for everyone to get seated the most flustered everyone becomes!

The worst table arrangement for kids is the high top, however these can work for a quick bite or while enjoying drinks while waiting for your table in the dining area.  Here are some tips to make the best of a high top:
  • Keep the kids in the stroller if possible right next to the table
  • Hold your child in your lap
  • If your child is old enough, have them sit in the chair and you can stand

If the weather allows it, we always always always try to sit outside especially near a flower planter.  Two reasons: sound carries better outside and your kid can play immediately beside their chair, which is always more appropriate outside!  Our next post will discuss food.
